Health Insurance Will Soon Be an Upper Class Luxury if Premium Rates Don't Slow Their Roll

Health insurance has grown steadily more expensive from 2000-2009, at a rate averaging 8% a year. Income, meanwhile, has risen at an average of 2% a year.

The cost of health insurance is escalating at such a pace that it will soon surpass the household income of average Americans by 2033, according to an abysmal new study called “Who Will Have Health Insurance in the Future? An Updated Projection.”

Annals of Family Medicine

The study was written by Dr. Jennifer DeVoe of Oregon Health & Science University in Portland and Dr. Richard A. Young of John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. They lay down some figures that paint an ugly picture of the present, if not necessarily the future health care system.

Most notably,

  • More than 50 million Americans did not have health insurance in 2010, the same year that the Affordable Care Act passed.
  • Five million Americans lost their health insurance at work between 2007 and 2009.
  • Health insurance will cost more than half of the average household income by 2021.

Reduce Your Overland Park Health Care Costs With Preventative Care

In light of these facts, we urge our community to take advantage of preventative care if they do have health insurance. Under the Affordable Care Act, all policies must cover a very broad range of preventative services, including: depression screening, diet counseling if you are high-risk, most immunizations, mammograms for women over 40, and obesity screening for children. You can read a very long list at Healthcare.gov .

We Offer Affordable Individual Health Care Plans in and Around Overland Park, KS

If you live in or near Overland Park, talk to us about plans. An HMO won't be too much if you go for a high deductible of say $5,000. That high deductible won't pertain to doctor's visits, which only cost a copay. So you'll get doctor's visits, preventative care and the guarantee that should you come down with cancer, it will cost you $5,000 and not hundreds of thousands of dollars.
